The San Diego Padres had a first half to forget
The Padres finished up the first half of the 2011 season with a 40-52 record which has them in last place in the N.L. West, 12 games behind the Giants. The Padres are also 14 games behind the Braves for the Wild Card in the N.L. The Padres are going to be sellers at the end of this month as they could go into a full rebuilding mode. Here is a look at the players who had the biggest impact for the Padres in the first half of 2011:
Team MVP: 32-year old righty swinging LF Ryan Ludwick has been easily the most productive hitter in the Padres’ lineup. Ludwick has played in 87 games for the Padres so far this year and he is 80 for 326 (.245 avg, .700 OPS) with 37 runs scored, 11 homers, 55 RBIs and 1 stolen base. Ludwick is the only Padres player with more than 31 RBIs (Chase Headley has 31) so far this year. The bad news for Padres’ fans is that Ludwick’s name is all over the rumor mill.
Biggest Surprise: 30-year old righty swinging outfielder Chris Denorfia wasn’t supposed to get a lot of P.T. this year but due to the utter lack of hitting, he has gotten to play quite a bit. Denorfia has played in 79 games for the Padres so far this year and he is 61 for 216 (.282 avg, .752 OPS) with 26 runs scored, 5 homers, 15 RBIs and 8 stolen bases.
Biggest Disappointment: 28-year old lefty swinging RF Will Venable had a breakout year in 2010 and the Padres were depending on improvement from him in 2011. That has not been the case. Venable has played in 66 games so far this year for the Padres and he was 47 for 194 (.242 avg, .640 OPS) with 22 runs scored, 2 homers, 14 RBIs and 15 stolen bases.
