24-year old lefty swinging Yonder Alonso is going to be the Padres’ starting 1B in 2012. He came over as one of the big keys in the Mat Latos deal with the Reds over the winter. Alonso played in 47 games for the Reds last year and he was 29 for 88 (.330 avg, .943 OPS) with 9 runs scored, 5 homers and 15 RBIs. Alonso also played in 91 games in AAA-ball last year and he was 106 of 358 (.296 avg, .860 OPS) with 46 runs scored, 12 homers, 56 RBIs and 6 stolen bases. He has now played in 69 games in his first two years in the majors and he is 35 for 117 (.299 avg, .833 OPS) with 11 runs scored, 5 homers and 18 RBIs. Alonso didn’t make any errors in 3 games at 1B last year for the Reds. He is an average defensive 1B at best.

27-year old righty Jesus Guzman finally burst onto the scene in the majors in 2011. He played in 76 games for the Padres last year and he was 77 for 247 (.312 avg, .847 OPS) with 33 runs scored, 5 homers, 44 RBIs and 9 stolen bases. Guzman had 4 errors in 53 games at 1B for the Padres, so he needs to improve defensively. At worst, Guzman will be the Padres’ first bat off the bench in 2012.

25-year old Kyle Blanks and 36-year old Mark Kotsay can also handle playing 1B if the need arises. Blanks played 13 games at 1B for the Padres last year and it’s his natural position. Kotsay will get most of his work in the outfield. He played in 11 error-free games at 1B for the Brewers last year.

The days of watching Heath Bell close games for the Padres is over as he signed with the Marlins over the winter. But, the Padres made a shrewd move in dealing with the division rival Rockies for Huston Street. He will take over as the Padres’ closer in 2012. The bullpen might also include Anthony Bass if he loses out on a rotation spot this spring. Here is a look at the Padres’ bullpen for 2012 as it stands right now:

Closer: Huston Street: 28-year old righty Huston Street will be the Padres’ new closer in 2012.
