The San Diego Padres need more out of Kevin Correia

29-year old righty starting pitcher Kevin Correia was the best the Padres had to offer last season. He started 33 games for the Padres last year and he was 12-11 with a 3.91 ERA and a 1.30 WHIP. This year Correia hasn’t been awful but he’s been nowhere near as good as he was last year. He has started 12 games for the Padres so far this year and he is 5-4 with a 4.98 ERA and a 1.40 WHIP. I have a feeling that Correia is going to start pitching better soon as he’s not the fifth best starter (like he currently is) on the Padres’ pitching staff.

David Wells has had a rough homecoming for the Padres

David Wells wanted to have a Local Kid does well vibe when he signed on with the Padres this off season but he’s had a somewhat hard time this year.  He is 4-5 with a 4.31 ERA and a 1.46 WHIP so far this season.  Wells still has his outstanding control so the key for him in the 2nd half will be to miss more bats as he has allowed 115 hits in only 96 innings this season.  Still, Wells is a warrior and a playoff race will likely bring out the best in him down the stretch.

David Wells is throwing batting practice so far this season for the San Diego Padres

David Wells is starting to pitch like a 40+ year old out of shape pitcher.  It was bound to happen at some point of Wells’ career which is winding down quickly.  In 6 starts this season, Wells is 1-1 with a 6.03 ERA and a 1.56 WHIP.  In 31.1 innings this season, Wells has allowed 42 hits and 5 homeruns.  At least Wells still has his control as he only has walked 7 batters this season.  Wells will need to do a better job of missing bats if he wants to keep his job and help the Padres win.

Clay Hensley off to a rough start for the San Diego Padres

Clay Hensley has started two games this season and he’s lost them both.  He’s only thrown 9 innings this season and he’s allowed 13 hits, 9 earned runs and he’s walked 5 batters.  He should snap out of his funk soon as he’s been a good pitcher so far in his major league career.
