The Padres have designated 26-year old righty starting pitcher Cesar Carrillo for assignment. Carrillo pitched in 3 games (all starts) for the Padres this year and he was 1-2 with a 13.06 ERA and a 2.71 WHIP. He gave up 16 hits (4 homers) and he walked 12 batters in only 10 1/3 innings this year for the Padres. Carrillo also pitched in 27 games (all starts) in AAA-ball this year and he was 5-14 with a 5.60 ERA and a 1.48 WHIP. The Padres saw enough of Carrillo to know that he wasn’t ever going to help them much.

The Padres have signed 32-year old lefty swinging outfielder Jody Gerut. Gerut played in 32 games earlier this year for the Brewers and he was 14 of 71 (.197 avg, .596 OPS) with 7 runs scored, 2 homers and 8 RBIs. Gerut has now played in 574 games in his major league career and he is 472 of 1,804 (.262 avg, .758 OPS) with 246 runs scored, 59 homers, 226 RBIs and 30 stolen bases. Gerut played in 137 games for the Padres in 2008+2009 and he was 122 of 441 (.277 avg, .790 OPS) with 63 runs scored, 18 homers, 57 RBIs and 8 stolen bases. With Tony Gwynn on the D.L., Gerut could come in pretty handy for the Padres down the stretch.

The Padres have signed 33-year old righty reliever Mike Koplove to a minor league deal. He pitched in 22 games (0 starts) in AAA-ball for the Mariners this year and he was 0-1 with 1 save, a 4.45 ERA and a 1.66 WHIP. Koplove last pitched in the majors in 2007 with the Cleveland Indians. He has pitched in 222 games (0 starts) in his seven years in the majors and he is 15-7 with 2 saves, a 3.82 ERA and a 1.31 WHIP. This was a good signing for the Padres as they will stash Koplove in AAA.

The Padres have acquired 27-year old lefty starting pitcher Tyler Lumsden from the Astros for future considerations. Lumsden pitched in 22 games (18 starts) in AA-ball last season and he was 4-9 with a 3.97 ERA and a 1.40 WHIP. He has now pitched in 147 games (93 starts) in his six years in the minors and he is 32-38 with 1 save, a 4.74 ERA and a 1.57 WHIP. It never hurts to stockpile lefties in the minors so I like this move for the Padres.

The Padres have designated 25-year old lefty swinging outfielder Quintin Berry. Berry played in 13 games in AA-ball for the Padres and he was 8 of 47 (.170 avg, .474 OPS) with 8 runs scored, 1 RBI and 2 stolen bases. He has played in 79 games overall this season in AA-ball and he is 58 of 285 (.204 avg, .584 OPS) with 43 runs scored, 2 homers, 26 RBIs and 25 stolen bases. The Padres needed Berry’s roster spot for newly acquired Ryan Ludwick.
