Cameron Maybin has played really solid ball for the San Diego Padres in 2011

24-year old righty swinging starting CF Cameron Maybin has turned in a pretty solid year for the Padres so far. He has played in 118 games for the Padres so far this year and he is 121 for 441 (.274 avg, .736 OPS) with 72 runs scored, 8 homers, 36 RBIs and 34 stolen bases. Maybin has now played in 286 games in his first five years in the majors and he is 256 for 989 (.259 avg, .712 OPS) with 165 runs scored, 21 homers, 81 RBIs and 53 stolen bases. The Padres think that Maybin is really to take his game to a new level in 2012 and beyond as they are trying to ink him to a long term deal.

The San Diego Padres lose Logan Forsythe for the rest of the year

The Padres have lost 24-year old righty swinging 2B Logan Forsythe for the rest of the 2011 season due to knee surgery that he is going to have later today. Forsythe came into this season as the Padres’ #13 prospect according to Baseball America. Forstyhe played in 62 games for the Padres this year and he was 32 for 150 (.213 avg, .568 OPS) with 12 runs scored, 0 homers, 12 RBIs and 3 stolen bases. He also played in 46 games in AAA-ball this year and he was 58 for 178 (.326 avg, .973 OPS) with 41 runs scored, 8 homers, 34 RBIs and 8 stolen bases. The Padres hope that Forsythe will be ready to compete next spring for a job on the team in 2012.

Anthony Bass is looking good so far for the San Diego Padres

23-year old righty reliever Anthony Bass came into this season as the Padres’ #22 prospect according to Baseball America. He’s proving why so far with the Padres this year. Bass has pitched in 20 games (1 start) for the Padres so far this year and he is 1-0 with a 2.03 ERA and a 1.58 WHIP. He has also pitched in 14 games (all starts) in AA+AAA-ball this year and he was 7-4 with a 3.62 ERA and a 1.19 WHIP. The Padres hope he keeps up the good work until the end of the year.

Jesus Guzman is still on fire with the bat for the San Diego Padres

27-year old 1B Jesus Guzman finally got his first extended shot in the majors this year after Anthony Rizzo couldn’t handle the majors. Guzman has played in 62 games for the Padres so far this year and he is 66 for 197 (.335 avg, .911 OPS) with 29 runs scored, 5 homers, 38 RBIs and 8 stolen bases. It’s going to be hard to take Guzman out of the lineup for the start of the 2012 season if he finishes this year hitting like he is right now. He looks like a pretty impressive late bloomer.

The San Diego Padres have claimed Andrew Carpenter off waivers

The Padres have claimed 26-year old righty reliever Andrew Carpenter off waivers from the Phillies. Carpenter pitched in 6 games (0 starts) for the Phillies earlier this year and he was 0-0 with a 7.71 ERA and a 1.82 WHIP. He also pitched in 34 games (1 start) in AAA-ball this year and he was 5-1 with a 1.79 ERA and a 0.98 WHIP. Carpenter has pitched in 11 games (1 start) in parts of four years in the majors and he is 1-1 with a 8.53 ERA and a 2.05 WHIP. Carpenter was once one of the most highly thought of prospects with the Phillies, so this is a worthwhile gamble by the Padres.
