The Padres have acquired 27-year old righty swinging infielder Steven Tolleson from the A’s for cash considerations. Tolleson has played in 46 games in AAA-ball so far this year and he is 48 for 175 (.274 avg, .782 OPS) with 29 runs scored, 5 homers, 19 RBIs and 8 stolen bases. His only major league experience came last year with the A’s when he played in 25 games in which he was 14 for 49 (.286 avg, .748 OPS) with 5 runs scored, 1 homer and 4 RBIs. Tolleson’s best position is 2B, so he might get a chance really soon to show what he can do with the Padres.

The San Diego Padres have placed Orlando Hudson on the D.L. again

The Padres have placed starting 2B Orlando Hudson back on the 15-day disabled list with a strained left groin just 7 days after coming back off the D.L. due to a hamstring injury. Hudson has played in 36 games for the Padres so far this year and he is 25 for 115 (.217 avg, .604 OPS) with 9 runs scored, 7 RBIs and 10 stolen bases. The Padres have called up rookie 2B Logan Forsythe to replace Hudson in the starting lineup. Forsythe played in 6 games earlier this year for the Padres and he was 0 for 7 (.000 avg, .125 OPS). The Padres will likely go back to platooning lefty swinging Eric Patterson and righty swinging Alberto Gonzalez at 2B until Hudson is ready to return to action. Patterson has played in 36 games for the Padres so far this year and he is 12 for 64 (.188 avg, .612 OPS) with 6 runs scored, 2 homers, 7 RBIs and 5 stolen bases. Gonzalez has payed in 27 games for the Padres so far this year and he is 12 for 61 (.197 avg, .505 OPS) with 6 runs scored, 0 homers and 6 RBIs. The Padres hope that Hudson gets well soon.

Brad Hawpe has been on fire in May for the San Diego Padres

31-year old lefty Brad Hawpe was so awful in April that the Padres were considering cutting him loose. They have been rewarded for there patience in the 1B. Hawpe has played in 22 games for the Padres so far in May and he is 24 for 74 (.324 avg, .958 OPS) with 13 runs scored, 4 homers and 11 RBIs. He has now played in 44 games overall for the Padres this year and he is 34 for 141 (.241 avg, .689 OPS) with 16 runs scored, 4 homers and 13 RBIs. Hawpe has also whiffed a stunning 45 times already this year. The Padres will still likely go with a platoon of Hawpe and Jorge Cantu at 1B for the time being.

Lefty reliever Mark Davis came out of nowhere to win the N.L. Cy Young Award in 1989 for the San Diego Padres. Davis pitched in 70 games (0 starts) for the Padres in 1989 and he was 4-3 with 44 saves (led the majors), a 1.85 ERA and a 1.05 WHIP. He only gave up 66 hits in his 92 2/3 innings in 1989 while whiffing 92 batters. Davis pitched in 230 games (0 starts) in his four years with the Padres and he was 14-20 with 78 saves, a 2.75 ERA and a 1.26 WHIP. Davis is still #5 in Padres’ history in saves (78) and he’s also tied for 10th in appearances in Padres’ history with Gary Lucas.

The San Diego Padres have sent Will Venable to AAA

The Padres have sent 28-year old lefty swinging outfielder Will Venable to AAA-ball. He has played in 40 games for the Padres so far this year and he is 30 for 134 (.224 avg, .584 OPS) with 16 runs scored, 0 homers, 8 RBIs and 11 stolen bases. Venable has played in 294 games in his first four years with the Padres and he is 230 for 929 (.248 avg, .720 OPS) with 130 runs scored, 27 homers, 107 RBIs and 47 stolen bases. He will likely get another shot with the Padres if he gets off to a good start in the minors. 30-year old righty swinging Chris Denorfia will likely take over as the Padres’ starting RF. Denorfia has played in 38 games for the Padres so far this year and he is 29 for 88 (.330 avg, .879 OPS) with 12 runs scored, 3 homers, 6 RBIs and 3 stolen bases.
