The Padres have designated 25-year old lefty swinging outfielder Quintin Berry. Berry played in 13 games in AA-ball for the Padres and he was 8 of 47 (.170 avg, .474 OPS) with 8 runs scored, 1 RBI and 2 stolen bases. He has played in 79 games overall this season in AA-ball and he is 58 of 285 (.204 avg, .584 OPS) with 43 runs scored, 2 homers, 26 RBIs and 25 stolen bases. The Padres needed Berry’s roster spot for newly acquired Ryan Ludwick.

The San Diego Padres acquire Ryan Ludwick from the Cardinals

The Padres have acquired 32-year old righty swinging outfielder Ryan Ludwick in a three team deal involving the Indians and Cardinals. The Padres have sent 22-year old lefty starting pitcher Nicolas Greenwood to the Cardinals and 24-year old righty starting pitcher Corey Kluber to the Indians in this deal. The Tribe sent veteran righty starting pitcher Jake Westbrook to the Cardinals. Ludwick gives the Padres a big bat for the outfield which they really need. Ludwick played in 77 games for the Cardinals last season and he was 79 of 281 (.281 avg, .827 OPS) with 44 runs scored, 11 homers and 43 RBIs. He has now played in 592 games in his 8 years in the majors and he is 529 of 1,942 (.272 avg, .832 OPS) with 291 runs scored, 98 homers, 349 RBIs and 16 stolen bases.

Nicolas Greenwood is off to the St. Louis Cardinals. Greenwood pitched in 21 games (17 starts) in A-ball for the Padres this year and he was 4-4 with 1 save, a 4.15 ERA and a 1.34 WHIP. Corey Kluber is off to the Cleveland Indians. He pitched in 22 games (21 starts) in AA-ball for the Padres this season and he was 6-6 with a 3.45 ERA and a 1.31 WHIP.

I really like this trade for the Padres as they got Ludwick without giving up any of their top 30 prospects.

The San Diego Padres acquire Miguel Tejada

The Padres have acquired 3B/SS Miguel Tejada from the Orioles for 24-year old righty starting pitcher Wynn Pelzer. The 36-year old Tejada played in 97 games this season for the O’s and he was 108 of 401 (.269 avg, .670 OPS) with 40 runs scored, 7 homers and 39 RBIs. Tejada has now played in 1,968 games in his major league career (14 years) and he is 2,222 of 7,721 (.288 avg, .803 OPS) with 1,156 runs scored, 292 homers, 1,224 RBIs and 78 stolen bases. Pelzer was the Padres’ #7 prospect heading into this season. He has pitched in 22 games (18 starts) in AA-ball this season and he was 6-9 with a 4.20 ERA and a 1.68 WHIP. Pelzer has walked an amazing 56 batters in only 94 1/3 innings so far this season. He pitched in 79 games (68 starts) in his three years in the minors with the Padres and he was 26-23 with a 3.83 ERA and a 1.38 WHIP. The Padres will find a starting job for Tejada at either SS or 3B. I like this move for them but they still need one more bat for the outfield.

The San Diego Padres lose Kyle Blanks for a long, long time

Blogged under General, Front Page, Injuries, Bloglockers by chinmusic on Thursday 29 July 2010 at 7:23 am

23-year old LF Kyle Blanks need Tommy John surgery on his right elbow which will cause him to miss the rest of the 2010 season and most of 2011. Blanks played in 33 games for the Padres this season and he was 16 of 102 (.157 avg, .607 OPS) with 14 runs scored, 3 homers and 15 RBIs. He has now played in 87 games in his major league career and he is 53 of 250 (.212 avg, .761 OPS) with 38 runs scored, 13 homers and 37 RBIs. He has also whiffed an amazing 101 times already in his major league career. This is a big blow to the Padres as Blanks is a big part of the team’s future.

The San Diego Padres need Everth Cabrera to pick up the pace with the bat

The Padres need 23-year old switch hitting SS Everth Cabrera to get back to the player he was as a rookie in 2009. In 2009, Cabrera played in 103 games for the Padres and he was 96 of 377 (.255 avg, .703 OPS) with 59 runs scored, 2 homers, 31 RBIs and 25 stolen bases. This year has been a nightmare for Cabrera with a bat in his hands. Cabrera has played in 48 games for the Padres this year and he is 33 of 163 (.202 avg, .556 OPS) with 15 runs scored, 1 homer, 21 RBIs and 7 stolen bases. With David Eckstein on the D.L. the Padres need Cabrera to pick up the pace with the bat or they might be forced to trade for a 2B or SS to replace him in the starting lineup.
