Tony Gwynn Jr. is playing like his daddy since coming over from the Brewers

26-year old lefty swinging outfielder Tony Gwynn Jr. is a legacy as his dad was the best player in Padres’ history. Jr. has played in 31 games since coming over in a trade with the Brewers and he is 35 for 107 (.327 avg, .869 OPS) with 19 runs scored, 1 homer, 6 RBIs and 2 stolen bases. Odds are that Gwynn Jr. will come back to earth at some point but it’s o.k. to dream. Tony Gwynn Sr. played 20 years for the Padres. In those 20 seasons, Gwynn Sr. played in 2,440 games in which he was 3,141 for 9,288 (.338 avg, .847 OPS) with 1,383 runs scored, 135 homers, 1,138 RBIs and 319 stolen bases. It’s just fun to have another Tony Gwynn on the Padres.

The San Diego Padres lose Josh Wilson on waivers to the Mariners

Josh Wilson’s stay in San Diego was very short lived as he only played in 16 games for them in which he was 4 for 38 (.105 avg, .348 OPS) with 2 runs scored and 1 RBI. Despite hurting at shortstop the Padres will not miss Wilson at all.

The Padres have acquired 28-year old lefty starting pitcher Mike O’Connor from the Nationals for a player to be named later. O’Connor has pitched in 16 games (11 starts) in AA+AAA ball this season and he is 2-6 with a 5.09 ERA and a 1.51 WHIP. O’Connor also has 26 games (21 starts) of major league experience in which he is 4-9 with a 5.45 ERA and a 1.43 WHIP. The Padres had nothing to lose by picking up O’Connor who was once a highly thought of prospect in the Nationals’ system.

The San Diego Padres lose Jake Peavy for at least one month

Blogged under General, Front Page, Injuries, Bloglockers by chinmusic on Tuesday 16 June 2009 at 4:48 pm

The Padres have lost #1 starter Jake Peavy for at least 1 month and possibly as much as three months due to a severe ankle injury. Peavy has started 13 games this season for the Padres and he is 6-6 with a 3.97 ERA and a 1.19 WHIP. This comes at a very bad time for the Padres as they were getting ready to listen to all offers for Peavy. Peavy has pitched in 212 games (all starts) in his 8 years with the Padres and he is 92-68 with a 3.29 ERA and a 1.19 WHIP. Peavy also has 1,348 whiffs in 1,342 2/3 innings with the Padres which shows just how nasty his stuff has been in his career.

The San Diego Padres trade OF Chris Snelling to the Pirates

Blogged under General, Front Page, Arrivals & Departures, Bloglockers by chinmusic on Thursday 11 June 2009 at 6:16 am

The Padres have traded 27-year old lefty swinging outfielder Chris Snelling to the Pirates for future considerations. Snelling has played in 49 games in the Mexican League so far this season and he was 58 for 179 (.324 avg, .955 OPS) with 34 runs scored, 5 homers and 29 RBIs. Despite Snelling’s good start in the Mexican League (AAA) and the Padres’ need for offense they still moved him. That’s probably because he’s never shown that he can stay healthy when in the majors.
