The Padres have re-acquired 29-year old righty swinging utility man Chris Burke. No word on what they had to give up to get him back. Burke has played in 10 games in AAA-ball this season and he was 9 for 38 (.237 avg, .724 OPS) with 7 runs scored, 1 homer, 3 RBIs and 2 stolen bases. It will be interesting to see if the Padres are going to audition Burke at shortstop seeing how it isn’t his best position on defense.

The San Diego Padres place shortstop Everth Cabrera on the D.L.

The Padres have placed rookie shortstop Everth Cabrera on the 15-day disabled list with a broken left hand. He will miss at least the next two months. Cabrera played in 6 games for the Padres so far this season and he is 4 for 13 (.308 avg, .742 OPS) with 4 runs scored. This injury is a shame as Cabrera was likely to get more playing time with Luis Rodriguez struggling.

The San Diego Padres place Walter Silva on the D.L.

The Padres have placed 32-year old righty starting pitcher Walter Silva on the 15-day disabled list with a strained right forearm. Silva pitched in 2 games (both starts) so far this season for the Padres and he was 0-0 with a 6.52 ERA and a 1.76 WHIP. The Padres have recalled 25-year old righty starting pitcher Josh Geer to replace Silva in the starting rotation. Geer is the #13 rated prospect in the Padres’ minor league system according to Baseball America. Geer has pitched in 2 games (both starts) in AAA-ball this season and he was 1-1 with a 3.60 ERA and a 1.70 WHIP. Geer made his debut for the Padres this season working 7 innings and allowing only 6 hits and 1 earned run while whiffing 4 batters and walking none. This should work out well for the Padres as Geer has a nice upside.

The San Diego Padres sign Chad Gaudin

The Padres have signed 26-year old righty starter/reliever Chad Gaudin to a minor league deal. Gaudin pitched in 50 games (6 starts) for the A’s and Cubs last season in which he was 9-5 with a 4.40 ERA and a 1.32 WHIP. He has now pitched in 185 games (50 starts) in his major league career and he is 28-25 with 2 saves, a 4.45 ERA and a 1.52 WHIP. This was a good gamble for the Padres who need help in the rotation at the back end. It’s also a smart thing for Gaudin to sign with the Padres who play half of their games at Petco Park which is one of the best pitchers’ parks in all of baseball.

The San Diego Padres claim 24-year old righty reliever Luis Perdomo off waivers

The Padres have claimed 24-year old righty reliever Luis Perdomo off waivers from the Giants. Perdomo pitched in 55 games (0 starts) last season in A+AA ball and he was 7-3 with 20 saves, a 2.36 ERA and a 1.09 WHIP. He only allowed 49 hits last season while whiffing 82 batters in 72.1 innings showing what kind of stuff he has. He will work out of the bullpen and the Padres have to keep him all season or they have to offer him back to the Cardinals as he was a Rule 5 Selection from the Giants over the winter.
