The Padres have lost outfielder Scott Hairston for the remainder of the season due to thumb surgery. Hairston played in 112 games for the Padres this season and he is 81 for 326 (.248 avg, .791 OPS) with 42 runs scored, 17 homers, 31 RBIs and 3 stolen bases. The Padres have recalled 25-year old lefty swinging outfielder Will Venable to replace Hairston on the roster. Venable has played in 120 games in AAA this season and he is 129 for 442 (.292 avg, .825 OPS) with 70 runs scored, 14 homers, 58 RBIs and 7 stolen bases.

The San Diego Padres trade Greg Maddux to the Dodgers

The Padres have traded 42-year old righty starting pitcher Greg Maddux to the Dodgers for a player to be named later. Maddux started 26 games for the Padres this season and he was 6-9 with a 3.99 ERA and a 1.22 WHIP. He should have a lot more wins than he does right now but the Padres couldn’t get him many leads or protect them. Maddux finishes his career with the Padres having pitched in 60 games (all starts) in which he was 20-20 with a 4.07 ERA and a 1.23 WHIP. Ordinarily it wouldn’t be a good idea to help out the Dodgers but the Padres aren’t going anywhere this season so it made sense to give Maddux a chance to pitch for a winning team.

Jake Peavy has been lights out for the San Diego Padres this season

Jake Peavy has been outstanding again this season for the Padres despite them having a terrible season. He has started 21 games for the Padres this season and he is 9-8 with a 2.61 ERA and a 1.14 WHIP. Peavy has only allowed 112 hits in 134.2 innings this season while whiffing 133 batters. Peavy should have a lot more wins than he does but the Padres just haven’t been scoring many runs when he is pitching.

The San Diego Padres place Chris Young back on the D.L.

The Padres have placed righty starting pitcher Chris Young back on the 15-day disabled list this time with a strained right forearm. Young has started 13 games for the Padres this season and he is 4-4 with a 4.74 ERA and a 1.49 WHIP. Young has had issues with his control this season walking 40 batters in only 68.1 innings and that just won’t get the job done. The Padres will probably consider shutting down Young for the rest of the season.

The San Diego Padres claim Brian Falkenborg off waivers from the Dodgers

The Padres have claimed 30-year old righty reliever Brian Falkenborg off waivers from the Dodgers. Falkenborg pitched in 16 games (0 starts) for the Dodgers this year and he is 2-2 with a 6.17 ERA and a 1.29 WHIP. The Padres like taking chances on pitchers who have failed elsewhere and Falkenborg has certainly done that. He has now pitched in 55 games (0 starts) in his major league career and he is 3-4 with a 5.82 ERA and a 1.60 WHIP. One man’s trash is another man’s treasure and that seems to be the new motto of the Padres.
