The Padres have designated outfielder Chip Ambres for assignment. Ambres didn’t do much for the Padres this season as he played in 8 games and he was 2 for 17 (.118 avg, .329 OPS). The Padres have activated Chris Young from the D.L. and he will make his first start since his nose was broken by a line drive. Young has started 10 games for the Padres this season and he is 4-4 with a 4.50 ERA and a 1.48 WHIP. The Padres have to be glad that Young is back as his injury was the beginning of the end this season for the Padres.

Mike Adams is the latest reliever to find himself for the San Diego Padres

29-year old righty reliever Mike Adams was coming off two lost seasons which really appeared to hurt his career but he has come back with a vengeance for the Padres this year. Adams has pitched in 27 games (0 starts) this season for the Padres and he is 1-0 with a 1.98 ERA and a 1.11 WHIP. Adams has been very aggressive this season as he has 43 whiffs in only 36.1 innings for the Padres this season. It seems that pitching half his games in Petco Park has helped resurrect Adams’ major league career.

The San Diego Padres trade Randy Wolf to the Astros

The Padres have traded 31-year old lefty starting pitcher Randy Wolf to the Astros for 26-year old righty starting pitcher Chad Reineke. Wolf started 21 games for the Padres this season and he was 6-10 with a 4.74 ERA and a 1.42 WHIP. The Padres are likely giving up on the season but it never hurts to add a decent prospect. Look for the Padres to call up Chad Reineke and give him a chance soon as he is already 26 years old. He was the Astros #7 prospect coming into this season according to Baseball America. Reineke has pitched in 20 games (19 starts) in AAA ball this season and he is 5-9 with a 4.41 ERA and a 1.31 WHIP.

The Padres have traded backup 1B Tony Clark to the D-Backs for 22-year old righty relief pitcher Evan Scribner. Scribner has pitched in 28 games (0 starts) in A-Ball this season and he is 3-3 with 9 saves, a 1.64 ERA and a 0.86 WHIP. He has only allowed 28 hits in 44 innings while whiffing 62 batters. This was a good trade for the Padres who weren’t using Clark much anyway. Clark played in 70 games for the Padres this season and he was 21 for 88 (.239 avg, .681 OPS) with 5 runs scored, 1 homer and 11 RBIs.

Matt Antonelli has been awful in AAA-ball for the San Diego Padres

The San Diego Padres are not happy with 2B Matt Antonelli who came into this season as the #2 prospect in the minor league system before the year started according to Baseball America. The 23-year old righty swinging Antonelli has played in 85 games in AAA-ball this season and he is 61 for 315 (.194 avg, .596 OPS) with 38 runs scored, 3 homers, 26 RBIs and 3 stolen bases. Antonelli might be blowing a big chance as the Padres could be in sell mode soon at the major league level but they would be nuts to call up a player that can’t even hit .200 in AAA ball.
