The Padres have acquired 28-year old righty swingman Cha-Seaun Baek from the Mariners for 26-year old righty Jared Wells. Baek is more effective as a starter and the Padres might just throw him into the starting rotation due to the injuries to Jake Peavy and Chris Young. Baek has pitched in 10 games (1 start) for the Mariners this season and he was 0-1 with a 5.40 ERA and a 1.37 WHIP. He has now pitched in 37 games (24 starts) in his major league career and he is 10-9 with a 4.96 ERA and a 1.35 WHIP. Baek is a flyball pitcher who should benefit from pitching half his games at Petco Park. Jared Wells was just recently called up by the Padres. In two games with them, Wells was 0-0 with a 6.00 ERA and a 1.67 WHIP. This was a good move for the Padres.

Heath Bell is still rewarding the Padres for saving him from the junk heap. Bell has pitched in 23 games this season and he is 0-3 with a 2.77 ERA and a 1.19 WHIP. Bell is the heir apparent to Trevor Hoffman as the Padres’ closer and that could be sooner rather than later based on Hoffman’s pitching this season.

The Padres have brought up 26-year old righty Jared Wells and 29-year old righty Mike Adams to try to help the bullpen out. Wells has pitched in 19 games (0 starts) in AAA ball this season and he is 1-1 with 9 saves, a 5.85 ERA and a 1.55 WHIP. He has not pitched in the majors yet. Mike Adams has pitched in 12 games (0 starts) in AAA ball this season and he is 3-1 with a 5.52 ERA and a 2.05 WHIP. But, Adams has pitched in 61 games (0 starts) in his major league career and he is 2-4 with 1 save, a 3.54 ERA and a 1.34 WHIP.

The San Diego Padres designate Justin Germano for assignment

The Padres have designated reliever/starter Justin Germano for assignment. He pitched in 12 games (6 starts) for the Padres this season and he was 0-3 with a 5.98 ERA and a 1.53 WHIP. The Padres better try to trade Germano in the next week or so because he probably won’t clear waivers. The Padres replaced Germano in the starting rotation with Shawn Estes. Estes has pitched in 3 games (2 starts) for the Padres this season and he is 1-0 with a 2.03 ERA and a 1.13 WHIP.

The San Diego Padres place Josh Bard on the D.L.

The Padres have placed starting catcher Josh Bard on the disabled list after he suffered a high ankle sprain due to a Albert Pujols slide into home plate. Bard has played in 38 games this season and he is 24 for 120 (.200 avg, .540 OPS) with 9 runs scored and 7 RBIs. The Padres will recall Michael Barrett from a rehab assignment to replace Bard in the starting lineup. Barrett has played in 3 games this season for the Padres and he is 2 for 8 (.250 avg) with 3 runs scored. Barrett was hot on rehab, playing in 3 AAA games and going 5 for 7 (.714 avg, 1.714 OPS) with 2 runs scored and 4 RBIs. Rookie Luke Carlin will back up Barrett. Carlin has played in 7 games for the Padres this season and he is 4 for 20 (.200 avg, .554 OPS) with 1 run scored and he has whiffed an amazing 9 times.

UPDATE: The Padres have decided to let Michael Barrett get a couple of more games under his belt in AAA so they have recalled Colt Morton from AA ball. Morton has played in 10 games in AA ball this season and he is 7 for 35 (.200 avg, .500 OPS) with 2 runs scored and 4 RBIs. Morton was up with the Padres for 9 games earlier this season and he was 1 for 15 (.067 avg, .234 OPS) with 2 runs scored and 1 RBI.
