The San Diego Padres waive Oscar Robles

The Padres have waived 32-year old infielder Oscar Robles. Robles played in 14 games in AAA for the Padres and he was 11 for 53 (.208 avg, .592 OPS) with 7 runs scored, 1 homer and 10 RBIs. Robles was quickly snapped up by the Phillies who needed help with Jimmy Rollins on the D.L.

Randy Wolf is off to a great start for the San Diego Padres

Randy Wolf appears to love pitching in San Diego. He has started 4 games so far this season and he is 2-0 with a 2.49 ERA and a 0.95 WHIP. Wolf has been very aggressive knowing that he has a huge home park to pitch in and that’s part of the reason why he has whiffed 25 batters in 25.1 innings this season. Wolf has the stuff to be a big winner in the majors and he will likely prove it this season as long as he can stay healthy.

Jim Edmonds hasn’t found a groove at the plate for the San Diego Padres

Jim Edmonds started the 2008 season late due to injury and he’s looking mighty rusty for the Padres so far this year. Edmonds has played in 17 games for the Padres this season and he is 11 for 62 (.177 avg, .519 OPS) with 4 runs scored, 1 homer, 5 RBIs and 2 stolen bases. Edmonds has also whiffed 20 times already this season as he is starting to look his age with a bat in his hands.

The San Diego Padres claim Josh Banks off waivers from the Blue Jays

The Padres have claimed 25-year old righty starting pitcher Josh Banks off waivers from the Blue Jays. Banks was the #25 rated prospect in the Blue Jays’ farm system according to Baseball America’s Prospect Handbook. Banks pitched has pitched in 4 games (3 starts) this season in AAA ball and he is 0-2 with a 6.88 ERA and a 1.53 WHIP. Banks has pitched in 127 games (126 starts) in his minor league career coming into this season and he was 50-42 with a 4.19 ERA. Banks has also pitched in 3 games (1 start) in his major league career and he is 0-0 with a 7.36 ERA. This was a decent move by the Padres.

The San Diego Padres lose Michael Barrett to injury

The San Diego Padres have lost catcher Michael Barrett for the next 6-8 weeks due to a sprained right elbow. He has played in 3 games this season for the Padres and he was 2 for 8 (.250 avg, .650 OPS) with 3 runs scored. The Padres have recalled catcher Colt Morton from AA to replace Barrett on the roster. Morton has already appeared in 1 game for the Padres this season and he was 0 for 1 with a run scored. Morton also has played in 4 games in AA ball this season and he is 3 for 12 (.250 avg, .641 OPS) with 2 RBIs. Look for Josh Bard to shoulder most of the load at catcher until Barrett is ready to return.
