Brian Giles had a very poor first half of the season for the Padres but he has been awesome since the All-Star Break.  In 34 2nd half games this season Giles is 44 for 130 (.338 avg, .985 OPS) with 19 runs scored, 6 homers and 20 RBIs.  Giles has now played in 85 games this season and he is 100 for 331 (.302 avg, .826 OPS) with 47 runs scored, 7 homers and 35 RBIs.  The Padres need Brian Giles to keep hitting the ball the way he is right now and they need his brother to wake up soon with the bat.

The Padres have signed outfielder Brady Clark to a minor league contract and they’ve sent him to AAA.  He will likely get called up when rosters expand on September 1st.  Clark had a rough time this year in Los Angeles as he played in 47 games for the Dodgers and he was 13 for 58 (.224 avg, .601 OPS) with 7 runs scored and 5 RBIs.  But, Clark is a decent hitter and that’s proven by his .277 career average in 757 major league games so he could help the Padres out.

The Padres have placed reserve OF/IF Scott Hairston on the 15-day disabled list with a strained oblique muscle.  This hurts the Padres bench a little bit as Hairston was on fire with the bat for them.  In his first 11 games as a Padre, Hairston was 8 for 20 (.400 avg, 1.400 OPS) with 5 runs scored, 3 homers and 7 RBIs.

The San Diego Padres place Michael Barrett on the DL

The Padres are going to place Michael Barrett on the 15-day disabled list with concussion like symptoms and they are going to recall Pete LaForest from AAA.   Barrett has been a disappointment since he was acquired from the Cubs.  The Padres were expecting Barrett to inject some offense into the lineup but he hasn’t done so.  In 31 games with the Padres, Barrett is 24 for 104 (.231 avg, .526 OPS) with 6 runs scored and 8 RBIs.  Josh Bard will step back into the starting lineup at catcher for the Padres.  He has played in 77 games this season and he is 69 for 253 (.273 avg, .737 OPS) with 24 runs scored, 3 homers and 30 RBIs.  LaForest returns to the Padres to back up Josh Bard.  He has played in 6 games this year for the Padres and he is 5 for 16 (.313 avg, .796 OPS) with 2 runs scored and 1 RBI.

The Padres have designated David Wells for assignment.  He started 22 games this season for the Padres and he was 5-8 with a 5.54 ERA and a 1.59 WHIP.  In 118.2 innings he allowed 156 hits, walked 33 batters and whiffed 63.  Wil Ledezma will take Wells’ next start.  Ledezma has appeared in 2 games this season for the Padres and he has worked 3 innings and has allowed 2 hits, walked 1 batter and whiffed 4.  In the near future the Padres will likely recall Clay Hensley to take over as their #5 starter.  He has pitched in 10 games (7 starts) this season for the Padres and he is 1-3 with a 6.18 ERA and a 1.81 WHIP.  In 39.1 innings this season he has allowed 48 hits, walked 23 batters and whiffed 22.
